Academic Summer Camp Programs

These are tentative schedule. They may change based on Students' needs and instructor availability. 
Students are free to select as few a class as they wish to attend. 
Students are free to mix the classes they attend.
CLA is not allowed to sell food to students, thus please pack your student’s lunch and snacks or make arrangements for them.


1. General Enrichment Camps


History Camp

MTWThF 4pm - 6pm ( May change upon request by majority of students and parents )

General overview of world history with emphasis on how everything affected each other. Special emphasis will be placed on how economical and technological aspects of various civilization affected its history and interaction with other civilization. Famous games based on various parts of history may be used further students' understanding if parents give permission for its use. Below are the expected topic of focus for each session period, subject to change upon agreement with the students and parents. Other topics will be discussed when appropriate or requested by the majority of students and parents.

  • June Camp : Rise and Fall of Ancient Empires.
The camp will start by looking at how ancient civilizations formed, some of the famous names and concepts from ancient times, and the cause of their prosperity and decline
  • July Camp : Medieval Age, Renaissance, and Imperialism.
The camp will explore the formation of major empires of the world between 5th century to 19th century. Special emphasis will be placed on events and conflicts that left a legacy which can still be felt, today.
  • August Camp : Age of war and science
The camp will explore Two World Wars and the Cold War, looking at the developments that led to them and also developments related to the war which directly shaped the world and society we live in. Special emphasis will be placed on science and technological discoveries that transformed how what a person or a group can do and achieve.


Literature Camp 

MTWThF 10:30am - 12:30pm ( May change upon request by majority of students and parents )

Students will go over notable work in English Literature of medium length. The work will be explored in depth, and students will take quizzes and write reports they may encounter in school, college, and many of the well known standardized tests. Special emphasis will be placed on how they might encounter element from the work in everyday life, and also how they may reference it appropriately in their conversations and writings. The work will be chosen based on inputs from the parents and the instructor before the start of the camp. Below are the expected topic of focus for each session period, subject to change upon agreement with the students and parents. Other topics will be discussed when appropriate or requested by the majority of students and parents.

  • June Camp : Shakespeare, To be or Not to be.
The camp will read and discuss Hamlet and other works by Shakespeare
  • July Camp : American Literatures
The camp will focus on works by authors from the United States with special emphasis on works in 20th century
  • August Camp : Pride and Prejudice
The camp will focus on works by British authors with special emphasis on works between 18th to 19th century.


Math Camp 

MTWThF 1:30pm - 3:30pm ( May change upon request by majority of students and parents )

Students will explore fundamental math concepts and various tricks they can employ to do the problems easier and faster. Efforts will be made to show how students may use math to understand many things they may encounter in everyday lives, and also the math concept and theory behind them. Students will be grouped by their ability and needs. Some tests and workouts will be given to help students use the knowledge in their schools. Below are the expected topic of focus for each session period, subject to change upon agreement with the students and parents. Other topics will be discussed when appropriate or requested by the majority of students and parents.

  • June Camp : Numbers and operations
The camp will focus on interesting properties of numbers and operations which students can use to do calculations faster. Wide range of topics related to number theory will be discussed, as well as tactics for estimating something seemingly difficult. The difficulty level will start from pre-Algebra level, but many advanced concepts a student may have skipped over in school will be found and be explored in depth. If possible, subjects from optimization and discrete math will also be discussed.
  • July Camp : Geometry
The camp will focus on geometry starting from very easy basics leading to advanced topics in Geometry. In the beginning, informal proofs will be used to help campers get a feel of various concepts in math and geometry. Very strict and formal logic and proof exercises will be given and discussed accordingly depending on camper's ability. Care will be exercised for students who have trouble with Algebra concepts to make sure they can participate alongside students who are good at Algebra. If possible, some introduction to Non-Euclidean or differential geometry will be done. Fun examples will be used to illustrate basic geometric concepts. Some games may be used as well to help students understand geometry related concepts. This camp will also touch upon concepts from physics if the situation permits it.
  • August Camp : Changes and collection
Base concepts related to Calculus will be explored in the level appropriate for majority of the campers. Many demonstrations and easy to follow examples will be given to help students even of pre-algebra level get acquainted with important concepts in calculus. If needed, camp will discuss movements, areas, and volumes of various objects and situation. Campers will also be shown how some of the Calculus concepts can be applied to normal daily lives. Other related topics like summation and compound interest will also be discussed along with examples like mortgage and investment risk assessment if possible.


Science Camp

MTWThF 8:00am to 10:00am( May change upon request by majority of students and parents )

Basic principles and concepts of Physics and Chemistry will be explored. The science behind many of the things in the news and daily lives will be explained to the detail appropriate for the students. Some quizzes and homework will be given to help students become comfortable using the knowledge in their school. Below are the expected topic of focus for each session period, subject to change upon agreement with the students and parents. Other topics will be discussed when appropriate or requested by majority of students and parents.

  • June Camp : History of Science
General overview of scientific concepts starting from the discoveries and beliefs of the ancient people. Mathematical or molecular basis of the concepts will be discussed along with plenty of examples and quiz questions. Scientific method will be explored in depth
  • July Camp : Science and Math
Math intense Science class connecting math concepts with those in various fields of Science. The campers will start by looking at Newtonian dynamics in casual light, gradually moving to why Newton needed to make Calculus and how you can use Calculus to find out many of the needed quantities. Modern Physics and Biological Math will be explored if campers develop sufficient understanding of concepts leading to them. Care will be exercised to help students understand the concepts and do the exercise without any knowledge of Calculus. Special questions will be given to those who can handle Calculus.
  • August Camp : Science of sports and games
Physics, Biology, and Chemistry concepts related to sports and various games will be explored. The camp will start with basic discussion about throwing and catching an object, and will move into other games or sports. Statistical and mathematical concepts like probability, expectation value, variance, and correlations will be discussed if campers show much interest in computer games, and if parents permits discussion of such game. Basic understanding of computers and internet may also take place if computer games is the focus of the day.

Daily SAT Class

  • SAT Reading A : MTWThF 8:00 am - 10:00 am   $350/week
  • SAT Writing A : MTWThF 10:30 am – 12:30 pm   $350/week
  • SAT Math A : MTWThF  1:30 pm - 3:30 pm   $350/week
  • SAT Bundle A (SAT Reading, Writing, and Math) : MTWThF 8:00 am – 3:30 pm   $1000/week

Morning ACT Class

  • ACT Math A: MWF 8:00 am - 10:00 am  $210/week
  • ACT Reading A : MW 10:30 am – 12:30 pm  $140/week
  • ACT English A: TTh 8:00 am - 10:00 am  $140/week
  • ACT Science A: TThF 10:30 am – 12:30 pm  $210/week

Afternoon ACT Class

  • ACT Math B: TTh 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm  $140/week
  • ACT Reading B : TThF 1:30pm - 3:30pm  $210/week
  • ACT English B: MWF  4:00 pm - 6:00pm  $210/week
  • ACT Science B: MW 1:30 pm - 3:30pm  $140/week

ACT Bundles

  • ACT Four class Bundle  $600/week
  • ACT ALL Eight class Bundle  $1100/week. Note that there will be much  overlap between class A and class B’s materials.

Mathematics

  • Algebra :  MTWThF 10:30 am – 12:30 pm    $350/week
         Overview of Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2 to lay the foundations for standardized tests

  • PreCalculus : MTWThF  4:00 pm - 6:00 pm   $350/week
          PreCalculus overview and SAT Math Level II test preparation

  • AP Calculus: MTWThF  4:00 pm - 6:00 pm  $350/week
         Overview and preparations for AP Calculus A, B, and C

  • Math Fundamentals : Saturday 10:30 am – 12:30 pm  $70/week
         The class focuses on fundamental math concepts and tips to quicker or more accurate calculation of mathematical operations.          Designed for students of any age who are having trouble with basic math problems

  • AP Statistics : Saturday 7:00 pm -9:00 pm  $70/week
          Problem-solving intensive class for AP Statistics exam preparation

Sciences

  • Chemistry  :  MTWThF  1:30 pm - 3:30 pm   $350/week
         Covers SAT and AP Chemistry materials

  • AP Physics :  MTWThF  7:00 pm - 9:00 pm   $350/week
         Overview and preparations for AP Physics A, B, and C, and also SAT Physics Subject Test

  • GRE Physics Subject Test : Saturday 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm  $70/week
          In-depth study of problems relevant to GRE Physics Subject Test  


Histories

  • AP World History : MTWThF  7:00 pm - 9:00 pm   $350/week
          Overview and preparations for AP and SAT World History Subject Test. Also teaches fundamentals needed for AP European             History and AP/SAT United States History Subject Test

  • AP European History : Saturday 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm  $70/week
          In-depth study of subjects relevant to AP European History Exam

  • AP United States History : Saturday 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm  $70/week
          In-depth study of subjects relevant to AP United States History Exam

Language and Literature

  • Literature class :  MWTThF 8:00 am - 10:00 am    $350/week
         Analysis of important works in English Literature. Designed for 8th grade and up

  • SAT Literature Subject Test : MTWThF  7:00 pm - 9:00 pm   $350/week
         Overview and preparation for SAT Literature Subject Test. Also teaches fundamentals needed for AP and GRE Literature Subject Tests.

  • Reading :  Saturday 8:00 am - 10:00 am  $70/week
          Reading comprehension class for 5th grade and up

  • AP English Literature : Saturday 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm $70/week
         More study into English Literature for those preparing for AP English and composition exam. This class will focus on contents in AP Exam that does NOT overlap with SAT Literature Subject Test class

  • SAT Spanish : Saturday 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm $70/week
          Problem-solving intensive class for SAT/AP Spanish exam preparation

  • AP French : Saturday 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm $70/week
          Problem-solving intensive class for SAT/AP French exam preparation

Miscellaneous

  • Practice Exams :  as needed   $20/hr
          Free for those taking at least one class
  • Guided Study Hall : As needed.  $15/hr
          Self-study program with limited supervision, guidance, and various help from highly educated supervisor. Ideal for high achieving students who occasionally need help with short tricky questions.

Though it is advised that students stay for the entire class/Study Hall time block, they can opt for staying for a shorter amount of time
The fee is charged by 15 minute blocks. The fee rate may differ depending on the number of classmates and instructor's quality.
Tuition are based on the small group class of four or more students.
For one-to-one sessions typical rate starts from $50/hr. Discounts are available for those in need of financial aid.
Students need not take all the class on the same day, nor take the class at the same time of the day. They can flexibly choose the time to attend.
